Lelystad (population 65,000) is the
capital of the province of Flevoland. This brand new city was built on
reclaimed land in the former Zuiderzee (Sea of the south). Lelystad was
founded in 195. The city was named after
Cornelis Lely, who engineered
the Afsluitdijk (which turned the Zuiderzee in a lake), making the
reclaiming possible. Lelystad is the main town of the region, built to a
controversial design in the 1960s. Part of the province has also been
designated as an
overspill area for Randstad Holland.
The first inhabitants of Lelystad arrived, mainly from Amsterdam,
in 1967, and since then the town has grown into an attractive place with
many parks and nearby nature areas. Apart from some interesting housing
developments, the main point of interest is the Informatie Centrum Nieuw
Land, located in the west of the city, which explains the polder
reclamation process using audio-visual presentations.
