Eindhoven is one of the main cities of
the provinces of North Brabant
in the southern part of The Netherlands. The city was founded close to the Dommel River.
It was chartered in 1232 by the Duke of Brabant and it remained a small
town until the 19th century and until the founding (1891) of the
Philips Electrical
Company.
The the city rapidly expanded. The company, one of the world's
primary electronics makers, is a powerful multinational corporation. In
World War II, Eindhoven was taken (Sept., 1944) by Allied troops in a
major airborne operation; a simultaneous landing at Arnhem failed.
Eindhoven has a technical university.
Important
monuments and buildings are : the "White Lady" (a Philips
building), the DAF-Museum (DAF cars were manufactured in Eindhoven) en
the Van Abbe Museum with its impressive collection of modern art
(amongst which a Picasso).
