brief history of a colorful past
The
oldest recorded history of this ancient castle dates from 1394. It
was then that Otto van Holtmeulen, through his marriage with
Elisabeth van Tegelen came to own "the House of Holtmeulen".
In the 17th century it was inherited by the families Von
Metternich and Von Hundt, Master of Busch. This latter gentleman
married off his beautiful daughter, who in 1744 subsequently
eloped with Reinhold von Glasenapp, the leader of a notorious band
of highwaymen.
Later the castle fell into gradual decay. Then in 1852 the mayor
of Tegelen had the old ruin rebuilt into an habitable and
attractive castle.
History is being made again in 1993 as an extensive restoration
and conversion transform the HOLTMÜHLE into a very special hotel,
which makes a stay there like a moment from history.
Arriving here is more like a homecoming
The
story of the building itself is relatively unknown. The main
building would originally have been twice as big. But it's the
estate as a whole which makes the Château so special.
Two remarkable 17th century castle gates evoke times long past,
when the area was known as "de Heerlijkheid Tegelen" (Tegelen
Glory).
The long shady avenue, the former tithe barn, the stately swans in
the moat and the romantic English garden are just part of the
incomparable surroundings.
The grandeur of Château HOLTMÜHLE begins even before your host has
greeted you : an inspiration for both business and pleasure.
The warmth of an old-fashioned welcome
The
family Van Basten-Batenburg took possession of the HOLTMÜLE in
1883 and planned to live there until 1975. However, they sold the
castle to the Municipality of Tegelen at an earlier date. The
restoration of the castle gates began in 1985.
Full restoration commenced in 1992, with regard to the castle's
heritage and rural surroundings.
The authenticity has been retained while providing full modern
facilities. A relaxed atmosphere is created by the harmony between
historic treasures, such as the open fireplaces and original
ceilings, and all the comforts of modern life.
So Château HOLTMÜHLE gives you the pleasure of the past and the
present ...

Prince van Orange Frederik Hendrik to make it his base ?
Probably the former, but the vista from your comfortable room will
convince you of the price's good taste.
The Château has 66 rooms and suites, all decorated in historic
style. The exclusive Otto van Holtmeulen Suite with its
timber-beam ceiling will provide memories of times gone by.
The embrasures in the restaurant "Die Alde Heerlickheijt" (the Old
Glory), with its outstanding cuisine, are other reminders of the
era of sieges.
Nowadays a stay at the Château is distinguished by its remarkable
tranquillity.
The best of the practical and the pleasurable
Château HOLTMÜHLE has a rich past when it comes to entertainment,
and we like to keep up the tradition.
The various banqueting halls, named after former resident families
lend an "historical" atmosphere to your wedding, celebration or
reception.
The same applies to the Château as venue for business meetings
with foreign clients, for a seminar or a conference. All the audio
and visual equipment you may need is available.

The
former gatehouse no longer survives. A new building has taken its
place, accessible via the covered bridge over the moat, where you
can enjoy the wonders of water.
Relax in the outstanding swimming pool, Turkish bath, whirlpool or
sauna.
A real highlight for bon viveurs is a visit to the Center Valmont.
Attain complete relaxation with the various herbal baths, bath
oils and algae packs of the beneficent Thalasso method.
You can choose from various beauty treatments. Of course, a game
of tennis or an invigorative walk are possible too.

Château HOLTMÜHLE's construction and elevated location made it
formidable. It also lies in a very prosperous area, close to the
trade centers of Venlo, Maastricht and Düsseldorf.

of natural beauty you need go no further than the grounds of the
Château, but a visit to the castle gardens of Arcen is certainly
worthwhile.
No less than 32 hectares of nature and culture are crowned by the
famous Rosarium, with its thousands of roses.
